I love Salma Hayek!

I do this thing with all my friends where we talk about the female celebs we admire and why, and who we'd date if we were a guy.
And I'm so going to get shot down in flames for saying this, but...
Men will always base their choice on looks.
Whereas women tend to go for personality.
Men obviously love a woman with a great personality, but if they have someone gorgeous after them (with no personality), it doesn't tend to put them off. Whereas women are so much more discerning (I'm laughing as I type this at how much flak I'm going to get for this, but I'm sorry, it's true!!)
I've interviewed lots of stunning-looking men in the past because of my work, and honestly, take it from me, a chat with someone gorgeous but who has nothing else to them, after less than a few seconds, you can feel the haze coming down.
My top female celeb has always been Salma Hayek because when you see her being interviewed, she's funny! And she's smart too. Both of these things give her substance and meaning, and make her far more attractive than she is anyway (let's face it, she's gorgeous).
I always have a bit of a beef about female celebs who only ever post pictures of themselves in bikinis. I get the world is all about attraction, but if you're female and only ever post pictures of yourself looking sexy, you're kind of saying there's nothing else to you.
Women can be gorgeous and sexy (and as it so happens, I have a sexy picture of a woman on my bedroom wall by the way, because the female form is sexy).
But women are also Kind. So Kind. They're also Empathetic. Nurturing. Loyal. Amazing Friends. Wise. Strong. Non-confrontational and able to calm situations down because they don't get wrapped up in the whole ego thing. And Smart - JUST as smart as men - and sometimes smarter because they don't get sucked into the whole ego thing.
So when I see female celebs who only post images of themselves looking sexy, I just think they're totally underselling women. They could be using their influence to make changes in the world, get things talked about, help people instead of just posing in bikinis all the time. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with posting the odd bikini picture. It just gets a bit boring if that's all it ever is.
In news articles this week, Salma Hayek told journalists it was her idea to make her character menopausal in the film, The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard.
She's quoted in the Indian Express (https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/life-style/salma-hayek-menopause-7379413)
as saying,
"People have the wrong assumption that (menopause) is when a woman stops being sexy."
She talks about how it's "unfair" to put an "expiration date for everything" on women - based on their "ability to create babies."
She adds: "It should not define us as women. For so long the concept of beauty in a woman was leaning completely to youth, and I think, f**k that s**t!” she added.
Quite frankly, apart from having a good point, anyone smart who ends a sentence with a feisty f**k that s**t gets a thumbs up from me!
It's something I feel really strongly about - that women should be valued for so much more than their looks as well as their ability just to "create babies" as Salma puts it.
But it's not just women, but men too.
It shouldn't be that when people get old they're not classed as important in society any more because they're no longer the money earners. Life is so much more than just money.
One of the first jobs I had when I started out as a journalist was interviewing old people for their golden anniversary. I also used to write obituaries. Both of which make you look at the lives of old people and their contribution to society. And honestly, talking to old people can be fascinating!
It would be easy just to look at someone old and only see their body - and make the assumption (wrongly) that because they move more slowly, they think more slowly. But I have interviewed so many really funny, smart old people who have done some amazing things with their lives, and overcome some awful tragedies, that it's just wrong to write people off after a certain age.
For me, it's almost like life is lived backwards somehow.
We spend all our younger lives caring about what our bodies look like, and thinking about our careers and some of the more material things in life, but by the time you get to old age when your body's screwed, you've had your career, you've experienced a lot of life's knockbacks, and actually you know what's important in life and what it really should be all about.
Old people might look old and doddery, but the things they say can really surprise you.
It's one of the reasons I love Elizabeth so much in Richard Osman's, The Thursday Murder Club. She's feisty and smart - and trouble! In other words, she has bags of character.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is no-one should be written off just because they're getting older, or are old.
Life is about experiences and memories and challenges. Being there for people you love. Staying open minded, and curious and loving life. Not just looks.
So my blog this week is to the amazingness of women (is that a word?!) but also to old people everywhere (male and female) - and to life in general being about so much more than just looks.
Good on you Salma!
** And yes, I did post a picture of Salma in a bikini on purpose. She earnt that one!
